A beam axle is a simple, robust and inexpensive suspension system, and its simplicity makes it a popular choice for light off-road vehicles, such as ATVs and utility vehicles. Its design has two important advantages: it is relatively inexpensive to produce, and it provides a high degree of structural rigidity, which is beneficial for off-road use.
However, beam axles also have certain drawbacks. They provide a relatively primitive ride quality, as they lack the sophisticated damping and suspension geometry found in more modern suspension designs. Additionally, due to their design, beam axles can be susceptible to excessive wear and tear and can suffer from axle tramp, which can cause the axle to flex and vibrate while the vehicle is in motion.
