I am 3 months pregnant now. I like papayas so much. But elders in my family are telling that eating papaya may cause miscarriage? So I an afraid to eat that sweet stuff. Is it true that eating papaya in pregnancy period leads to dangerous miscarriage?

For this purpose it was often applied directly to the uterus, but food forms such as green papaya salad, the seeds of papaya in the parasite killing papaya seed smoothie ahead, as well as supplements containing papain enzyme are best avoided by pregnant women.

This warning does not extend to a fully ripe fresh fruit with no green on it. These papaya fruit contain much lower levels of papain and are generally considered very healthy for pregnant women with its rich antioxidant and vitamin content and many other health benefits.

Yes and no! Papaya is a good source of essential nutrients to a pregnant woman especially the ripe ones, but the unripe papaya is the one that must be avoided by pregnant women. The ripe papaya is rich in fiber, potassium, choline, vitamins A, B and C. All these nutrients are important for a pregnant woman.

On the other hand, unripe papaya poses great dangers to a pregnant woman, basically because it contains certain chemicals that could cause miscarriage. Such chemicals are: latex and papain. Latex can trigger marked uterine contractions which could lead to early labour. Papain maybe mistaken for prostagladins needed for inducement of labour. It could also loosen the membrane surrounding the fetus. Papain can cause allergic reactions which is not safe the pregnant woman and the fetus.

The conumption of papaya shouldn't be completely be avoided by pregnant women but rather make a good choice in eating the very ripe ones and not the unripe.

Some old people claimed that eating papaya is a common way to abort a pregnancy, which is not a good thing to do.
